Busting out of this picturesque university town at the bottom of the world in the late 1970s, The Chills were at the forefront of the musical movement ‘The Dunedin Sound’. Then the highest profile band on iconic indie label Flying Nun Records, by the 1980s The Chills had become the darlings of US college radio along with the likes of R.E.M. and Pixies. They established themselves as, in the words of R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, “the second best band in the world”.

Late in 2017, The Chills’ lead singer and songwriter Martin Phillipps was given a dire medical prognosis resulted in a desire to preserve the legacy of himself and the band. Martin has now picked apart a lifetime of memories and discovered precious items that will be showcased within the exhibition Things Change: Martin Phillipps and The Chills.

This 36 page exhibition catalogue includes an entire discography of the band, images of objects in the exhibition and their family tree of all iterations of the band throughout the years.
